It has been a month since the twin scandals of "Juetengate II" and "Gloriagate" came out against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Several congressional investigations have already been launched to bring out...nothing. Opposition lawmakers have only used the investigations to grandstand and bash the President. Other politicians and wanna-be revolutionaries have called for yet another "People Power" revolt to oust the president and create a "revolutionary government". Mercifully, so far they have gained neither people nor power.
What's happening in the Philippines right now can only be described as tragicomic. All these people seem to have forgotten that Democracy isn't just about popular opinion, or kicking out leaders with no "moral" authority. Democracy is all about the rule of law, and without it there'll only be chaos. Instead of agitating the people and exploiting the Filipino's natural tendency for emotionalism, an objective, level-headed investigation should be launched to determine the truth. And if the results warrant it, a proper impeachment complaint should be filed against President Arroyo. And please, this time both sides should let the process reach its logical conclusion and live with the final decision. As for the President and her henchmen, it would really help them if they stop acting like they're guilty (assuming they're not) and avoid such undemocratic acts as arresting people for making anti-GMA propaganda materials and sellers of the CDs containing the alleged conversation between the President and an election official. They will also look calmer and in control of the situation if they don't turn the whole capital into a military camp every time there's a protest rally.
Right now there are no signs that the issues will die soon. Hopefully, when those scandals do go away, Philippine Democracy, or what passes for it, will still remain.
